Variety Show: GAA With A Twist
December 14th:
Rehearsals:
We rehearse every day for a few classes. We practice different scenes and songs. On Tuesday evenings we have a choreographer come in to teach us dances for the variety show.
27th of September:
We learned the dance chorography for the ‘Jailhouse Rock’ scene from ‘All Shook Up.’ Angela Didek taught us it. Its hard work learning it all so fast but worth it for the end product.
7th of November:
We went into room M and learned the dance from the scene ‘We Go Together’ from Grease. This dance was longer than the first one and was confusing to remember at the start. By the end of the three classes I had a good grasp at the chorography though.
14th of November:
We went to the gym and rehearsed the dance ‘We Go Together’. We learned the last few moves and practiced it from start to finish. We also learned the dance to go to the song ‘Born to Hand Jive’. This dance was a little more challenging as there is a lot of hand movements involved.
21st of November:
We ran through ‘We Go Together’ and ‘The Hand Jive’ to perfect them. We organised our placing in the dance as well.
29th of November:
We rehearsed the dance to ‘We Go Together’ and perfected it by adding in a move or two and fixing spacing.
30th of November:
We went through ‘We Go Together’ and ‘The Hand Jive’ routines and improved them.
5th of December:
We ran through the dances and perfected them.
12th of December:
We ran through the dances and organised spacing on stage since the extension came.
The Show:
For the Variety Show, we had to rehearse a lot to get everything right. We started organising the show in September. Mr Coughlan came up with different scenes we could use. We all worked together to make each scene the best it could be.
For the stage, a group of Ty students designed and painted it. The finished product looked amazing.
For the costumes, Miss Lohan came to meet us and told us what we should look like. She told us some shops to look in for old Ireland clothes and to look at our grandparent’s houses. She also ordered skirts online for our dance routines in ‘Grease' and ‘All Shook Up.’ Finally, we all found what we needed, and it was a big help to make the variety show better.
During all our music classes, we practiced songs and dances leading up to the variety show.
When Angela came in we learned and practiced our dances with her. We went to the gym or room M to learn and practice them with the music. We learned a dance to the song ‘Born to Hand Jive' and ‘We Go Together.’
We practiced for a few classes everyday on the stage coming up to the Christmas exams. Unfortunately, when the Christmas exams were on we could only practice when we had music class and the odd time in room 'M' when we had dance rehearsals with Angela. When the Christmas exams were over it was full steam ahead to perfect the show and the songs.
The week of the show we had numerous dress rehearsals and went over everything. We only had one night to perform, and everything needed to be ready.
The day of the show, we did one final dress rehearsal with mics and lighting as the extension for the stage came and the lights and microphones arrived. We then went home to rest before we had to come in for the show. At six, we all came in and got our hair and makeup done. I already had my makeup done so it wasn't too bad I just needed to get my hair curled which ended up only taking about ten minutes. Before the show started, we had a pep talk from Ms Murtagh, Ms Coyle, Ms Hartnett, Mr Coughlan and Ms Lohan and then we started. At the interval We rested and got ready for act 2. When the whole show was over, we took our bows and listened to the speeches. Myself and Eric spoke a small bit about our appreciation towards the main teachers and I presented Miss Murtagh and Miss Coyle with flowers and Mr Coughlan with chocolates that we all chipped in for so I could buy them.
I loved the show and all my parts in it as I actually had a lot and was in most of the scenes with some scenes me being the lead roll. I wish we could go back.
